attachment’s uncut knot—so rich, so dark,

so dense a node the ache still bleeds,

still binds, but cannot speak.

COLEORTON

Again, at evening, the winter walks

supported on her brother’s arm—not,

as at Forncett, snatched, fugitive,

but an entitlement, an earned dependency,

the welding of everything somehow since

lived through: her brother’s wedding day,

those vows whose undertow was of such force

it laid her prostrate on an unfamiliar bed:

Mary, her sister now, delivered

of three babies—“all famous,” declares

their father, who can be a wag, can

quite well write a letter when he chooses,

“for being exceedingly ill-managed”:

sweet, stolid, vengeful Johnny; Dora,

a tireless chatterer; and poor Thomas, in

the midst of teething, who cries and cries:

three safe lyings-in, cut through by one

fearful bereavement: washed ashore

weeks after the Abergavenny foundered,

the body of John Wordsworth lies

in Wyke churchyard, on the Dorset coast. No stone

marks it. Two years will soon have passed.

They have not gone there. At Grasmere,

every gale that shudders in the chimneys

is his memorial—made the more poignant

by months, night after night, of worrying

over Coleridge.
